Pottery & Paint

In the world of pottery painting mug ideas, there are two main answers to the question ‘what types of mugs can I paint?’

The first is a shop-bought mug that has been glazed and fired, while the second is what’s known as bisqueware. We’ll come to that in a moment.

Shop-bought mugs will have either a matte finish or a glossy finish and many of these will be waterproof and ready to paint with porcelain or enamel paint.

Bisqueware is the type of pottery you find in the paint-your-own pottery cafés. It’s porous so that paint sticks to it and it’s been fired once so it’s durable. Once you’ve painted bisqueware, it needs to be sealed and fired again in a kiln. If the mug is intended for practical use and not just decorative purposes, a food-safe glaze should be applied before the final firing.

The best ceramic mug painting ideas are done on bisqueware using underglaze paint. They offer rich, vibrant colours and are excellent for detailed work. They also maintain their colour really well after the glaze is fired.

When it comes to the paint, it’s safer to avoid painting the inside of the mug and the lip and to ensure only non-toxic paints are used.

These painting cup ideas are all about exercising your own individuality and above all, having fun! From words, dots and lines to beautifully intricate floral designs and Mondrian-style geometric patterns, there are no limits, you can do as you please! Here’s a few ideas to get you started but you’ve got a blank canvas to be as creative as you like!

Lines

Wavy lines, straight lines, diagonal lines, zig-zag lines or any which way you choose! Use masking tape to get them perfectly straight and this is a great way to develop your pottery painting mug ideas.

Dots

One colour or all colours of the rainbow, dots of all sizes look great. From small dots to what are known as cow spots, dots look great!

Messages & Quotes

Some of the most personal and heartfelt ceramic mug painting ideas are famous quotes or messages to loved ones. Whether it’s a birthday or anniversary message or something deep and meaningful to someone you love, there’s no better gift to receive. For this type of artwork, paintbrushes might not be ideal so you can use permanent markers or gold and silver glitter pens for a wonderful texture and shine.

As we said, where cute mug painting ideas are concerned, you can never have too many! Abstract designs where each picture is different look great, as are images and representations from the world of nature such as leaves or flowers. Interesting and original takes on clock faces look great, as do animals and tribal prints, fruit, or a swirl of randomness!
